“Localism isn’t dead as such,” says EDDC Leader Paul Diviani.

Today’s edition of BBC 1’s Sunday Politics South West asked,  “Is Localism a Myth?”
In recorded interviews, Independent Councillors, Claire Wright and Susie Bond, fresh from their stunning  victories in the County, and District by- election, respectively,  both agreed that it was.

They cited the fact that Government Inspectors had ruled against strong opposition by District and local councils and many residents, to plans for large numbers of houses at Ottery and Feniton. The judgement was made  on the grounds that EDDC did not have a Local Plan in place and could not prove a five year land supply for housing.
Questioned about this on today’s television programme, Council Leader Paul Diviani said EDDC’s Local Plan had been delayed by consulting the public seven times! He said that he sympathised with local people who had  development forced upon them by  Government Inspectors. Whilst claiming that “Localism isn’t dead as such”, he admitted that what the interviewer called “the Tory flagship policy” of localism wasn’t working. The problem, he said, was at Westminster, not with local councils.
This last statement seems somewhat out of tune with Cllr Diviani’s boast not so long ago in the Sidmouth Herald (October 19th 2012), that Council and Coalition were in total agreement.

Interviews with Devon Councillors on BBC Politics Show this Sunday morning (12 May).

SOS  supporters may be interested in this weekend’s tv programme, described in this extract taken from Councillor Claire Wright’s blog :

BBC’s Politics Show shines spotlight on East Devon

The BBC’s flagship Sunday Politics Show will shine a bright spotlight on East Devon this week, with a series of interviews about what impact planning issues had on the council elections last week. The south west part of the programme, will also examine the appeal of independent councillors. There will be interviews with Dr Margaret Hall from the East Devon Campaign to Protect Rural England, new EDDC councillor Susie Bond, who was elected in a landslide victory in last week’s Feniton and Buckerell by-election, following Graham Brown’s resignation. I was also interviewed by Jenny Kumah about how important planning issues were to residents during the election. Answer: It was one of the top two issues raised with myself and Roger Giles, as we went from door to door talking with residents. Following the interviews, there will then be studio discussions with local MPs and possibly EDDC’s leader, Cllr Paul Diviani. Tune in at 11am on BBC1 this Sunday.

STC objects to new notice board in Old Fore Street.

Sidmouth Town Council has recommended refusal for retrospective planning permission for the new noticeboard on the Pure Indulgence wall, in Old Fore Street. Grounds for refusal are that it is a hazard for delivery lorries, and that it is too untidy.

Intended for  local news and events,  SOS has found  this town centre noticeboard very useful. Though unprotected, notices have been treated with respect, and the board is constantly full, and easy to access.

The deadline for comments to EDDC  (online or in writing) is midday this Friday, 10th May. Please quote reference 13/0770/ FUL/
